I’ve been lucky enough to visit Edinburgh several times over the years – it’s one of my favourite cities! My sister and I spent a long weekend there back in July – it was her first time in Scotland and I loved re-visiting some of my favourite spots with her. We arrived with very loose plans (unusual for me as I love an itinerary) but we managed to squeeze lots in. We had the best few days; sightseeing, eating/drinking way too much and enjoying the sunshine! I thought I’d share some of the pictures I took.
What to See
VICTORIA STREET
You probably recognise the curved hill and colourful store fronts of Victoria Street from Instagram/Pinterest – it’s one of Edinburgh’s most famous tourist spots. It’s said to have been the inspiration for Diagon Alley, so it’s definitely one to visit if you’re a Harry Potter fan like me!
If the weather’s good, be sure to grab a seat outside one of the many quaint cafes and watch the world go by for a while.
DEAN VILLAGE
Dean Village is a peaceful, medieval-esque haven located just 10-15 min from Princes Street. It’s hard to believe you’re in the middle of a bustling city when you’re here – it’s so serene. My sister and I both agreed this was our favourite part of the trip; we loved wandering the cobbled streets and admiring the beautiful buildings and gardens. What I would give to live in one of those fairy tale cottages!
Don’t forget to take a trip down the Water of Leith walkway while you’re here.
CIRCUS LANE
Circus Lane is another location you probably recognise from Instagram. With its elegant mews houses and flower-adorned doorways, it’s the perfect photography hotspot! We grabbed a coffee from a local independent cafe and took a slow stroll – again, it’s the perfect place to visit if you fancy a break from the busy city centre.
ARTHUR’S SEAT
Arthur’s Seat is an ancient volcano located in Holyrood Park. At the top of its 251m summit you have the most spectacular views of the city. We decided to skip the trail but I did it a few years back – it’s strenuous but worth it! Treat yourself to a hearty breakfast or a strong drink afterwards.
EDINBURGH CASTLE
We didn’t visit the castle this time round but it’s worth a trip if you’ve not been to Edinburgh before. Every afternoon (except for Sundays) the famous ‘1 o’clock gun’ is fired, a tradition that has been carried out since 1861.
The castle is also another amazing spot to see views of the city, so remember to take your camera.
THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SCOTLAND
This was my first visit to the museum and I really enjoyed it. You could easily spend all day here – there’s so much to see and do. It’s suitable for all ages and free to enter, so a great affordable option. The fashion and textiles galleries were wonderful – definitely my favourite section!
STOCKBRIDGE
Stockbridge is such a beautiful part of the city. It’s around a 20 minute walk from Princes Street and is home to a number of gorgeous independent cafes and boutiques. If you’re visiting over the weekend, make sure you visit the food market, which trades every Sunday from 10-5.
Where to Eat
BREAKFAST/BRUNCH
LEO’S BEANERY – 23A Howe St, EH3 6TF
Leo’s Beanery is located on a quiet street in Stockbridge, just a 2 minute walk from Circus Lane. It’s a charming, family-run cafe serving breakfast, coffee and cakes.
HULA JUICE BAR – 103-105 W Bow, EH1 2JP
My sister and I ate here before spending the morning at the museum. It’s perfect if you’re on the hunt for a healthy breakfast! We both had the granola but the smoothie bowls looked incredible. The staff were also wonderful!
GREENWOODS – 61 Frederick St, EH2 1LH
Greenwoods was probably my favourite restaurant from the weekend. It was the only place we stumbled across and didn’t book! I loved the luxe decor and gorgeous menu. I had a ‘posh’ fish finger sandwich and my sister ordered the green ribbon salad. The portions were huge and the food was to die for. I’ll definitely be coming back here on my next trip!
THE EDINBURGH LARDER – 15 Blackfriars St, EH1 1NB
I’ve seen The Edinburgh Larder described as a ‘hidden gem’ but it was super busy when we arrived for breakfast. It’s definitely worth a visit but I’d recommend booking if you can!
DINNER/DRINKS
JUNK – 14158 S Clerk St, Newington, EH8 9PS
My sister and I came straight here for Sunday lunch after our long train journey. It was absolutely delicious – I had the pork belly whilst my sister had the roast squash wellington. The cocktails were wonderful, too!
THE DEVIL’S ADVOCATE – 9 Advocate’s Cl, EH1 1ND
Tucked away down a cobbled alley in Old Town, The Devil’s Advocate is a quirky bar with an extensive selection of cocktails. It was super cosy and atmospheric; we loved it!
They also serve food – we didn’t eat as we had reservations elsewhere but the menu was tempting!
CONTINI – 103 George St, EH2 3ES
Contini is a stunning Italian restaurant in the heart of New Town. With it’s delicious menu, beautiful interior and friendly staff, it’s the perfect choice for a Saturday night dinner. It’s a little on the pricey side but nice for a special occasion or if you’re feeling fancy.
PARADISE PALMS – 141 Lothian St, EH1 1HB
A must-visit for vegans/veggies! My sister and I came here for dinner and drinks and we loved the quirky interior and diner-style menu. We both had the ‘chicken’ caesar salad which was fantastic and so filling.
THE BROUGHTON – 46-48a Broughton St, EH1 3SA
Located just a short walk from Princes Street, The Broughton has a relaxed ambience, elegant decor and all the charm of a cosy, country pub.
Shopping
Torn Vintage, Eden, Pie in the Sky, Curiouser and Curiouser, Grow Urban, Isle of Skye Candle Company, Golden Hare Books, Perre Handmade Jewellery, Jorum Studio, Black Moon Botanica, Melrose Candle Co.
Until next time, Edinburgh! x
