Dudmaston Pools: A 5k Walk and Apple Flapjacks
It’s finally getting cool enough to take Frank out for longer walks during the day, so on Thursday we headed over to Comer Woods for an easy 5k stroll. This is one of my favourite local walks – there’s so much variety for such a short distance, and there’s a couple of stops for a light lunch or coffee and cake.
This is one of those walks that is beautiful whatever the weather – the pools are glorious in the summer; and the dogs can enjoy a paddle. However I love all the rich colours of the forest during Autumn. I’m excited for golden leaves!

DUDMASTON POOLS CIRCULAR
📍 Location: Dudmaston, Shropshire
🥾 Distance: 4.7km
⏱ Time: Approx. 1 hour
⛰ Difficulty: Easy
🐶 Dog friendly: Yes (there’s a bit of road walking and 2 busy roads to cross however, so be mindful!)
🍺 Pub/cafe stop: Yes
🚗 Parking: National Trust car park
🌧 Mud factor: 3/5
You can either park at Dudmaston or Sawmill Car park – I usually choose Sawmill as it’s quieter. You then cross the road and head over the fields into Comer Woods.

I love walking through woodland – how pretty is that dappled light!

There’s also something so magical about a forest path – it gives me storybook vibes! Whenever I see a path in a photo (or even a painting) I always think it looks so inviting… I’m itching to know where it goes.

The blackberries were out in full force… Frank wasn’t too sure though.

The woods make up a large chunk of the walk. The paths are flat (minus a steep but short incline near the end) and clear so they’re very accessible. As it’s National Trust the route was unsurprisingly busy.
Along the way you will pass the Wall, Seggy and Brim pools. There are some lovely spots to sit and enjoy the view. If you’re lucky you’ll spot the swans!
After passing the pools you’ll come to the A442. There’s a recent sign advising not to cross, so you can find an alternative route if you wish. I usually follow the AllTrails map and cross the road at this point but be careful if you have dogs or small children as it’s pretty busy.

You’ll then head back into woodland and eventually reach the Dudmaston Big Pool. It’s worth noting that the footpath here is closed on Fridays and Saturdays, so plan your trip accordingly.
You’ll pass the entrance to Dudmaston Hall on your way back to the car park. If you have a National Trust card it’s definitely worth a visit. The gardens are especially beautiful.

I decided to refuel at the Orchard Tea Room – no cake for me today, but I can never resist a post-walk coffee.
They usually have some goodies from the garden/orchard on sale near the entrance of Dudmaston – I picked up some Charles Ross apples to make flapjacks with. The arrival of the colder weather has really got me into baking again. I’ll definitely have to pick some blackberries soon too before they go out of season!
I used this recipe from Jo’s Kitchen Larder for my flapjacks. They were super easy to make and turned out delicious.

EASY APPLE FLAPJACKS
You will need:
300g porridge oats, 175g unsalted butter, 50g golden syrup, 150g light brown sugar, 300g apple (grated, no need to peel) 1-2 tsp cinnamon and 50g raisins/sultanas (I also used extra for topping).
Method
- Preheat your oven to 170 degrees.
- In a saucepan, ddd your sugar, butter and syrup. Gently heat until smooth (be careful not to burn!)
- Once melted, add your oats, cinnamon, apple and sultanas to the mixture.
- Pour the mixture into a pan lined with greaseproof paper and bake for 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool completely before slicing!
A short yet sweet stroll followed by an afternoon of baking. In my opinion, the perfect way to spend a day off. I hope you enjoyed coming along! I’m looking forward to photographing and sharing more of my favourite routes with you.
